 - Elessina Hull Re-paint No.2-

After 4 years in fresh water in the River Thames on the 5th June 2011 Elessina was placed on the Barge Blocks at Strand on the Green near Kew Railway Bridge. Julie and I were assisted by our very good friends Annie and Graham in the task of preparing and repainting Elessina's hull.

1st Hull Repaint 2007

To scrape and sand the hull with 2 orbital sanders took 18 man/woman hours.

We then applied 2 coats of black Comastic paint with rollers which took a further 10 hours.

At the time we were on the blocks the tides at Strand on the Green allowed 7 hours working time before the water quickly rushed back!

Hull Condition after 7 years?

  • Rust The hull was still in remarkably good condition, with no rust at all below the waterline. The only rust above the waterline was a small section on the very top of the rudder and also on the hull around the hole where the rudder post drops through the hull. Ian had fitted an anode to the rudder due to corrosion found (please refer to previous article 10/9/2007) The anode is working well as no corrosion was found on the rudder below waterline.

  • Barnacles. There were no barnacles only weed and slime which was easily removed with Harris long handled wall and tile scrappers (available from Homebase in the decorating section) The blades were sharp hardened steel. They cut through the debris like butter I’m not sure we would have coped without them.

  • Unpainted flat bottom. The unpainted flat bottom plate still has no rust.

  • Painted Surfaces The old Comastic paint applied under the waterline by Ian 4 years ago was still in good condition and largely intact. The red prime was not visible other than a small section underneath the kitchen sink drain. I presume chemicals from the sink had turned the Comastic into globules around this small area. Again there were a few small areas on the hull where it was down to bare steel, but again there was no rust.

The Port of London Authority now charge £10 per day for the use of the blocks which now have to be booked in advance by contacting the Harbour Service Upper Crew on 07711640095 or 07711640128. They normally come alongside during High Tide to collect the fee at some time during your stay. However on occasions, as in our case, they were too busy. In these circumstances please contact them prior to leaving to make alternative arrangements to pay otherwise they will chase you for payment!!

Scraping from bow to stern . The section by the ladder has been scraped revealing a lime like water stain on top of the Comastic. This was smoothed during sanding
