A little about us

Cladding. The interior of Isabella is predominantly pine tongue and groove cladding, finished in Danish oil (I much prefer oil to varnish, easier to apply, gives a good finish, does not peel off). We have 3 different types of pine cladding, simple thin cladding on the roof from B&Q, good quality thick cladding on the upper sides (Jewsons) and curvaceous 'heritage' cladding from Wicks on the lower sides. Using panel pins through the upper tongue (and a dab of glue) the pins can not be seen.

12v Electrics. Running electrical cable needs to done be soon after / simultaneous to the cladding, so thought needs to be given to where the lights are to be fitted etc. at a quite early stage. I decided a simple 12volt system with a 6 + 3 gang switch / fuse panel (it started with 6, but on reflection I wish I had installed two 6 gang panels, as I have used them all up, and a spare would have been nice). We have the following fused outlets; 1) Starboard interior lights, 2) Port interior lights, 3) Fridge, 4) Water pump, 5) Shower waste pump, 6) TV and 12v socket outlets, 7) Shaver point, 8) Horn, 9) Tunnel light.  For the fridge and TV I used 8.5mm² cable, for the rest I used 2.5mm². 8.5mm² is expensive, but the thicker the cable the less volt drop, and the fewer running problems...... It depends on how far away the fridge and TV is from the batteries... Best to consult reference books, instruction manuals etc.

Batteries. We have 3 batteries, one for starting the engine, the other two for domestic use (lights, fridge, TV etc). This has worked out fine, but I intend to connect another battery for the domestics, so that we do not have to run the engine so much, just to charge the batteries.

Inverter.  We have a 300watt inverter, sufficient for the TV, video and cd. The TV is a standard 14" portable. The inverter cost around £70.

Fridge. We have a Shoreline 12v electrical fridge, low power drain, works well. No problems.

Hot Water. We have a 12 gallon horizontal calorifier / hot water tank installed under the bed. Connected to the diesel engine. Gives heat after about 30mins of engine running, and if water is used sparingly in the evening, enough hot water in the morning for at least one shower.

Cooker. Vanette 4 ring gas hob (4000/2) and built in oven / grill (GG7000), green coloured with gold handles etc. We are pleased with both.... no problems.

Work tops. Our kitchen work tops are tiled (mixture of green and Cream). The grouting took a lot longer than I expected, but the effect is worth it. I used cork tile adhesive, which gives a more flexible adhesion, thus reducing chances of loose tiles when the boat hit the side of a lock gate etc....... not that we ever hit the side of a lock!!!!!!. After one year we have had no loose tiles. I tiled the shower cubical in the same way, with cork adhesive, from B&Q.
