Navigating from the UK to the Mediterranean.

Navigation to the Med is a few years away for us. This map gives a guide on some of the waterways through France and the various routes available. Suitable for just about all sizes of barge, although a powerful engine will be required if choosing some of the fast flowing rivers (Rhine etc). I understand it takes around 4 weeks to get to the Med, but best to allow 8 weeks. Around 200 locks, ranging from 40m x 5m to 180m x 12m, some automated, some manual. The skipper will need an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) qualification.

It is also possible to cruise to the Black Sea, from Holland, along the R.Danube. Around 3,300km (Dark blue route) shown below, with many other interconnecting rivers and canals.

For better cruising charts and much more continental cruising info see 'Afloat in France' www.tagweb.co.uk/french-waterways
