DBA The
Barge Association
An
association exists called the DBA – The Barge Association. If you are
interested in any wide beam craft, even if it is a distant dream, I
would highly recommend you join the association. At around £25 per year
you will learn a great deal about all aspects of wide beam boating,
receive a good quality
colour
magazine (BlueFlag)
every other month and get the
opportunity to attend some of their rallies.

The
DBA also has an on line news group list, anyone joining the list can
send an e-mail that is received by everyone else on the list. E-mails
content vary enormously, from engine parts requests, fit-out tips, barge
maintenance etc etc. I believe there are around 500 people on the list,
on average I receive around 6 DBA e-mails per day (sometimes zero,
sometimes 20!).

Understandably, the DBA
focuses predominantly on old barges, but new build is included. There are
around 1,500 DBA members.

The
DBA hold a number of gatherings throughout the year plus an annual
Rally.

In
2002 they celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a rally
in Ghent
,
Belgium
. Around 40
Barges attended, including around half a dozen new builds. Most of
the attending barges crossed the channel in the weeks leading up to
the event, including one narrowboat Replica Dutch Barge.

In
2003 the annual rally was held at
Beal
Park, along the
River Thames.

The
2004 annual Rally was held at West
India Docks, London

The 2005
Continental rally was at Namur, Belgium June 17-20

The
2005 UK Rally was at Chatham, Kent
on August 27-29

The 2006 UK rally was
held at Beale Park along the River Thames

The
10th Anniversary rally at
Ghent,
Belgium
in June 2002 was a great
event with around 40 barges from within the Dutch Barge Association. We
were invited to look over many barges and found the event very
interesting. It convinced us that we were doing the right thing in
getting afloat ourselves.
