Sept 2010 - House Battery Replacement

Sadly the house batteries expired on the 22nd August 2010.  About a week before I was surprised to find that one of the battery filler caps was laying next to the battery.  I initially thought that I had forgotten to replace it when checking the battery however in hindsight it had been blown off through pressure in the battery. On the 22nd August I was checking the batteries prior to sailing to Beale Park and found that all of them now had large cracks in the top of the casings.

Kilworth Marine Services, Tims Boatyard, Staines tested the batteries and found that they were no longer holding their charge. It appeared that at least one of the 2v cells had failed causing the others to overcharge.  I initially looked at installing Rolls 2V 1380 Ah Series 4000 Marine batteries the cheapest quote I found for 12 was £3372 however I found that they were too large for the battery compartment. In fact I could not find any Marine 2v batteries to fit the compartment. I then considered fitting Rolls 4v 770 Ah Series 5000 Marine batteries @ £1962 for 6. This however would have only given me a total capacity of 4620 Ah as opposed to the 11040 Ah capacity of the old traction batteries.

Kilworth Marine Services also put out a tender on my behalf  for replacement batteries. The cheapest they were able to source and supply were 2v 965 Ah Fork Lift truck traction batteries @ £2182 representing a considerable saving over marine batteries interestingly they are a lot smaller than the batteries they replaced.
